Mashed potatoes. I can't give you a straight answer. Maybe it's the texture. Maybe it's the taste. Maybe it's a combination of the both. Maybe I had some traumatic childhood experience in which mashed potatoes somehow scared me for life, who knows. The simple fact is, I don't like mashed potatoes. I don't recall ever liking mashed potatoes. Why am I bringing this up you ask? Easy, Thanksgiving. It's always around this time, this feast of endless amounts of turkey, jello, and green bean casserole that some brilliant person comes to the realization that I don't like mashed potatoes. It goes a little something like this:

"You don't like mashed potatoes?"
"Nope."
"How can you not like mashed potatoes??"
"I don't know, I just don't like them"
"Thats weird I LOVE mashed potatoes"
"...great...pass the green bean casserole please"
"I can't believe you don't like mashed potatoes, thats so crazy."
"...just don't like em..."

Its flawless. Every year I go through the same conversation with some relative or friend who has never heard of anyone not liking mashed potatoes. Often times its even the same relative that just kind of forgets year after year. I can deal with that. However it's the people that try to make fun of me for not liking mashed potatoes that annoy me. The people who take a big schlop of the white stuff and try to say something witty like "Pass these to Darrell, He loves them!" or "Here you should set these by Darrell, we all know how much he likes mashed potatoes!" and then I can always count on my mom to chime and say something like "Oh Darrell just loves his mashed potatoes!" Everyone just gets a big kick out of it. And it's funny because it's only with mashed potatoes. No one ever says "Hey lets set this plate of liver and onions by Darrell, we all know how much he loves them!" So whats the deal? Are you people entertained by the fact that I don't like mashed potatoes? Why is setting the potatoes by me funny?? My mom doesn't like snakes. Maybe sometime at the dinner table I should be like, "Hey mom you don't like snakes? Oh well, here I guess I'll set this snake beside you." Now that would be funny.
