THE WORST DAY EVER
by Elizabeth Compton
Fridays, by definition are bad school days. The end of a 5 day school week and the students have had enough! And who can blame them?? Rainy days are also horrible. Children are wild when it rains. This is multiplied by the fact that they can not go outside for recess. So when I woke up this Friday morning, and heard the rain pouring down like...like rain does when it pours down I thought to myself "Today is going to be the worst day ever." Driving to school in MY black Dodge Dakota pickup truck in the pitch black pouring rain was only the begining of the adventure. I parked in my usual spot and then stepped out of the car...into a puddle that reached my ankles. My shoes and what is infintately more important, my socks were soaking wet. And that was just the begining.
On Thursdays, my children have no special (no art, music or library) so i am with them all day long. On Fridays, they go to the media center. (What we used to call the library!) The media specialist has been absent on Friday twice this year, leaving me stuck for two days in a row with no break at all. i just knew, that this particular friday she would be absent again. And she was. No media center. No break.
A college student working in my classroom was supposed to teach math Friday afternoon. I waited 1/2 hr. after the time she said she would arrive. She did not show up. She did not call. Nothing. She had taken the math lesson home. I had to borrow the lesson from the teacher next door.
And just when you think it couldn't get any worse...(remember folks it can ALWAYS get worse!) A child stole 20 dollars from my assistant's desk! He or She admitted to taking the money, however, could not produce it for us! Sigh. That was a fun phone call to the child's parent!!!
At least this occured on a Friday, and I had the weekend to recover!
